Disc spring lock washers (also known as Belleville washers) are conical-shaped washers designed to provide a spring force when compressed. They act as both a spring and a locking device in bolted or fastened joints.

2. Purpose / Function:

• To maintain tension in a bolted joint even under vibration, thermal expansion, or relaxation.

• To prevent loosening of nuts and bolts in dynamic or load-changing conditions.

• To absorb shock and compensate for thermal expansion or creep in assemblies.

3. Design & Working:

• It has a cone (disc) shape rather than being flat.

• When you tighten the bolt, the disc flattens slightly, storing elastic energy.

• This stored energy helps push back against loosening forces, maintaining constant pressure on the joint.

5. Material & Finish:

• Usually made of spring steel, stainless steel, or phosphor bronze.
